At Rose Avenue Vets in Coffs Harbour and Toormina Road Veterinary Clinic, we provide a quick and painless microchipping service. Microchipping your pet is very important. A microchip is a permanent form of identification and should your pet ever get lost it significantly increases the chances of your pet being reunited with you. This applies to all pets and companion animals from birds to horses.
Microchips have become very small, they are smaller than a grain of rice. In cats and dogs, they are implanted just under the skin, between the shoulder blades at the back of the neck. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded on a database registry with details about the animal and owner. Should your pet stray or become lost, most vets and local councils can scan your pet for a microchip and contact you via the database.
It is very important to keep your contact details up to date on the microchipping database. If you move house or change your phone number you will still be contactable should your pet end up at a vet or the pound.
Microchipping for cats and dogs is mandatory in NSW and by law, your pet cat or dog should be microchipped prior to you purchasing him or her. However, as this does not always occur we advise you to check with us on your first visit so that we can ensure that it is all in order.
When a pet is transferred to a new owner, the new owner must ensure their contact details are recorded on the database.
